What is DBT?

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) is one of the least affordable psychological treatments that is in the highest demand across Canada. We want high quality DBT services to be more accessible and affordable.

Comprehensive DBT includes individual psychotherapy, skills training, and phone coaching. DBT has evolved into an effective treatment for mental health challenges that are rooted in emotion regulation difficulties (i.e. substance use, anxiety, depression, or suicidality).  DBT is an evolution of traditional Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT); it includes skills found in CBT treatments with the addition of Mindfulness and Acceptance based skills.

There is evidence that DBT skills training alone is an effective treatment for a variety of mental health challenges.  Midtown DBT currently facilitates group classes on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. This group is for individuals 18 years of age and older.

What’s included in the course?

Our 24-week program consists of four modules that cover the main DBT skills of Mindfulness, Emotion Regulation, Distress Tolerance and Interpersonal Effectiveness. Each module is six weeks long. Sessions are 75-minutes and include:

  • An introductory mindfulness practice

  • Homepractice review

  • A short break

  • An interactive discussion using audio, video and role playing to teach the skill of the week.

These programs are delivered workshop-style with a focus on skills building and how to practise these skills in your daily life. We encourage all clients to participate to their comfort level and we will work together to build your confidence to do so.

Which days are classes available?

  • Mondays from 7:30-8:45 pm (there are 2 Monday classes)

  • Tuesdays from 12:30-1:45 pm

  • Tuesdays from 7:30-8:45pm

  • Thursdays from 7:30-8:45 pm

Where will the group be held?

Groups will be facilitated online using a secure platform that meets all PHIPPA requirements.  A secure link will be sent to you to access the online group. Groups will be 75 minutes long and include up to 10 participants and one or two facilitators.

How much do classes cost?

Each session costs $40 with 6 sessions per module. There are 4 modules total in each course. Clients must register for at least one module at a time (one module is six sessions). Because we use online platforms, we can deliver high quality programming at an affordable rate. Please check with your insurance company to confirm that you are covered for services delivered by Registered Social Worker or Master’s of Social Work.
