What is Covered in the Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) - Adolescent Program?

Midtown DBT offers a 24-week multi-family DBT skills group. This is an evidence-based intervention for adolescents experiencing emotion dysregulation and their families. Youth (13-18 years of age or grades 9-12) and at least one primary caregiver will attend the group together for the duration of the program.

 Program Agenda

Adolescents will learn skills in five key areas:

  1. Mindfulness

  2. Distress Tolerance

  3. Emotion Regulation

  4. Walking the Middle Path

  5. Interpersonal Effectiveness.

Family members will learn about emotion dysregulation, how to respond effectively to their loved one, and how to encourage skill use at home. Adolescents and family members will learn how to “walk the middle path”, which is a DBT skill-set developed specifically for teens and their parents. These skills help to bridge communication between caregivers and teens to maintain relationships during challenging times.  Every session, adolescents and family members have an opportunity to collaboratively learn about and practice the skills most useful to adolescent-family member relationships.

Although it is not required, most adolescents will work concurrently with an individual DBT therapist to address their specific concerns and receive support in applying skills to their lives. Family members are also encouraged to meet with a family member coach to address issues related to family dynamics if needed.

The adolescent program is $80/family/ session.
